We were busy watching a group of young elephant bulls drinking when this big tusker arrived. He is well known in this reserve and he is probably the highest ranked elephant bull in our concession area although not the biggest tusker and go by the name of Shoshangaan. He was in musth as can be seen from the excretion leaking from his temporal glands and urine dribbling from his hind legs. The elevated level of testosterone associated with musth can make these bulls extremely dangerous and they should be approached with caution. We followed him after he drank and left in the direction of a mud wallow where he enjoyed a few minutes of relaxing mud therapy.
