WEEKLY HIGHLIGHTS #60
The title ‘weekly highlights‘ fits this blog post slightly better than the previous ‘week in pictures‘ simply because we highlight the outstanding sightings of the week and no better time for a change than with the 60th edition.
I think the sighting that got everyone from guests, guides and trackers to the lodge personal excited were the 3 Wild dogs. Earlier in the week they made a brief appearance between the lodge itself and the staff accommodation before heading over the rolling hills. Then a few days later they were spotted relaxing next to a waterhole with two hippos in the background. The dogs clearly had a successful hunt earlier that morning with full bellies being evident. A single spotted hyena made his way down to the water to quench his thirst but soon realized he will have to find an alternative source.
Early one morning we set out to find some of the Kudyela lionesses and a few cubs but instead of finding any lions we located a black rhino bull. He just finished drinking at a waterhole and made his way directly towards us. With the sun to our backs he slowly approached the vehicle to get our smell and after a few minutes moved off into the nearby thickets.
Faka Nchovela was found at the end of the week sitting on top of a large termite mount overlooking an open grass field scouting for a meal. She went from point to point using anything she could for elevation, we hope to find her with a kill soon so we can get the opportunity to view her cub/s as we have had no luck in finding her den site.
We did not see much of the Kudyela pride this week but spending time with them even if only for a short while is always a great experience for any safari goer.
