A video taken on the 29th of January 2016 by tracker Eric of hyena cubs suckling from their mother. They can nurse from their mothers for 12 – 16 months, but can start eating meat from as young as 3 months. Their milk have the highest protein content of all carnivores and second highest fat content after polar bears and sea otters. Hyena cubs are black when born and change to their familiar spotted pattern after 3 months. They are born with tiny canine teeth and siblicide occur especially under same sex litters. They are fascinating animals and a highlight with any safari is a visit to a den site. We are very lucky to have a clan of hyenas whose territory falls within our traversing area and most of their den sites are known to our guides and trackers offering excellent opportunities to enjoy and photograph the interaction at a den site.
