A video taken by ranger Rul of a lion drinking water at Ngala dam on the 27th of October 2015. This is a male that we do not often see as he spends most of his time further east of our traversing area. Lions are quite inefficient at drinking; lapping water using only their tongues and can often be seen drinking for longer than 5 minutes in order to quench their thirst. They drink readily when water is available, but are not water dependent getting enough moisture from the blood of their prey to survive in desert conditions. They prefer to drink after a good meal and can often be seen visiting water holes just before sunset.
