A video taken by Ranger Rul of an elephant herd drinking at Ngala dam on the 18th of January 2016. I have explained in a previous post about elephants and the amount of muscles in their trunks. To refresh your memory: elephants have 8 muscles on each side of their trunk which is divided into 150 000 individual muscle units. It is obviously quite an undertaking to learn how to control this very useful and fascinating apparatus. Young elephant calves will spend their days learning how to master control of their trunks. Drinking water by using their trunks is an near impossible task when younger than 4 months and they would bend down to drink using their mouths. This video illustrates the point beautifully.
