Sam and his guests saw this amazing sighting early morning while on a wildlife safari on the 17th of September 2015. The lions killed this buffalo during the early hours of the morning and they had just started feeding when Sam and Remson found them. Buffaloes are formidable adversaries and not easy to catch and kill. Lions would have to weigh the reward of a big meal that can last a few days against the risk of serious injury or even death. Hunger and number of other prey species within their territory would certainly play a role. Time of year as well. Buffaloes that are weak from loss of condition after a long dry winter are much easier to catch than during the summer months. They would often test a herd to look for buffalo that seem to be vulnerable like the old, injured or sick.
